World Oceans Day, 8th June.
This is a day to celebrate the ocean and to raise awareness about ethical and sustainable ways to use its resources. The theme for World Oceans Day 2022 is “Life and livelihoods: ethical and sustainable ways to use the ocean’s resources.”
According to the United Nations, the ocean covers over 70% of the planet and is vital to our survival. It produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen and is home to most of the earth’s biodiversity.
When it comes to our food chain, it is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. The ocean is also key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.
United Nations World Oceans Day 2022 on is the first-ever hybrid celebration of the annual event, featuring both in-person programming hosted at UN HQ in NYC and virtual components for global public accessibility.
